Selby Civic Society’s new guide to Selby’s history and heritage – “Swanning Around Selby” - was unveiled to an audience of members and invited guests at a launch event in Selby Town Hall on 19th September 2014.
Guests included Selby and Ainsty MP, Nigel Adams, Councillors from Selby District Council, Selby Town Council’s Mayor, the Chair of the regional Yorkshire and Humber Association of Civic Societies, a representative of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and many members of community organisations in Selby.
After a buffet lunch and a welcome speech from Society Chairman, Michael Dyson, the special features of the new guide were presented by David Lewis and David Moss. A guided walk to further demonstrate the on-line features ended with a tour of Selby’s magnificent Abbey Church.
The free guide, which is available as a 32-page booklet from Selby Library, Selby Abbey, Selby rail station and Selby Town Hall, contains six themed walks to guide the walker to a total of 60 heritage features, a brief guide to Selby Abbey, and information on Selby’s other medieval building – the Abbot’s Staithe, a former monastic warehouse which it is hoped will be restored and brought back into beneficial use in the next few years.
The unique feature of the booklet is its content of QR codes for 20 of the most important heritage sites. Scanning these with a smartphone QR code reader allows the user to be linked to a further 80 pages of information about the sites.
The guide is also available as a downloadable e-version from this website – see the Publications page. Here, hyperlinks in the text are allow the reader to access the supplementary information.
