CIVIC SOCIETY’S 50th ANNIVERSARY ?THEN & NOW? CALENDAR
In 1969 Selby Civic Society was founded to help the town prepare for Queen Elizabeth II?s visit to present the Maundy Money in Selby Abbey. The Society has been active ever since caring for the history and character of the town with a programme of projects, events and public meetings, and 2019 will see its 50th Anniversary.
A series of special celebratory events is planned for next year and to start this the Society has launched a “THEN & NOW – 50th ANNIVERSARY” calendar for 2019.
Designed by Society member Angela Lambert-Dowell, in addition to providing the expected features of an A3-size calendar, it is lavishly illustrated with twelve monthly pairs of comparison photographs of interesting images of Selby.
Mostly from around 1969 and the modern-day, these show how the town has changed ? or in some cases remained remarkably similar ? over this 50-year period. Monthly pages show, for example, fascinating changes at the Town Hall, Cochranes Shipyard, Selby Baths, Wetherells store and Selby station.
The cover page (below) shows a 1960’s photograph of Gowthorpe from the late Fred Harland collection, and other images have also been generously offered by other photographers for inclusion in the calendar.
The calendar is on sale to members of the public in Wetherells Selby store, the Selby Town Council office, Selby Times office, Selby Library and The Hub Cafe for ?7.00, or it can be posted to a UK address for ?10.00 p&p included.
For further information contact Selby Civic Society?s Secretary by email at selbycivicsociety@yahoo.co.uk or phone 01757 268418.
Ideal Christmas present for anyone interested in archive photographs of Selby, but hurry as stocks are limited.
