For our June meeting we welcomed Emma Sharpe from Historic England (Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas) for a talk on her work on Conservation Areas.
We learnt about her role, and the work which is being done in the Selby area, and in particular Abbot’s Staith. We discovered how Historic England and English Heritage now have split functions.
Overall, Emma defined the important issue as being making “places worth caring about” and after all that is fundamental to what the Civic Society is about.
An interesting discussion took place at the end of the meeting about concerns in the Conservation area of Selby. We will be keeping in touch with Emma.
