The Society held a competition earlier this year to find a candidate development for a 2016 “Good Design Award” plaque. These are the bronze plaques that have been awarded by the Society for many years to recognise distinctive and high quality developments in Selby District. You can see earlier awards on the Society website under the Plaques tab.
Thank you to all the members who submitted nominations for the award.
From an original list of nine nominations ranging from Selby Rail Bridge to a residential property in Thorpe Willoughby, a short list of four developments was chosen for final judging. These were:
1.Community Woodland in Millgate, Selby.
2. Hemingbrough Memorial Garden.
3. Former Whiskers building development in Gowthorpe.
4. Selby Leisure Centre in Scott Road.
The winner was the former Whiskers building development in Gowthorpe, which was chosen for its mix of commercial retail and residential housing. The judges were particularly impressed by the attention to detail of the restoration design and the high quality of the building work.
The runner up was the Memorial Gardens in Hemingbrough; third place was the Millgate Woodland Development in Selby; fourth place was Selby Leisure Centre.
The Award Plaque will be presented to representatives of the architect, developers and builders at a ceremony outside the building in Gowthorpe at 10.00 am on Wednesday 30th November, to which all members of Selby Civic Society are invited. There will be hot drinks and cakes afterwards at Costa Coffee cafe (upstairs room) in Market Cross
