A morsel of Moggy and a peck of Potato Cheesecake
“Durability, efficiency, economy” is the title of a new edition of a hand-written Edwardian cookbook containing long-lost local delicacies such as Moggy, Potato Cheesecake and Cheap Cabinet Pudding
Discovered in the junk pile of a charity bookshop by local historian David Lewis, the story behind the book is told by a temporary display at Goole Museum.
You’re invited to “Meet the author”, David Lewis, at Goole Museum on Saturday 13th August from 10.30am to 12 noon.
David will be on hand in the gallery to answer any questions from 10.30am.
At 11.30am in the museum Education Room David will give a short presentation about the fascinating life and times of Mary Eleanor Blakey, the Hemingbrough-based farmer’s daughter, who began to record her kitchen knowledge back in 1903, from which the new book is derived.
Those coming to the talk will be able to enjoy a cup of tea and sample several of the cakes made from the recipes in the book.
Mary was all but forgotten before David began his research. Now her story lives on through this book. Not only does it chart her life, it is filled with recipes and sound advice from the days when women worked hard to feed their families on little money and without the luxury of convenience food or supermarkets.
“Durability, Efficiency, Economy” was Mary’s pithy description of how a good kitchen should be run. Copies of the book will be available to buy at this event.
This is a free event, but places for the talk are limited, so come early to avoid disappointment. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
