SELBY CIVIC SOCIETY?S ?SWANNING AROUND SELBY? GETS BIGGER.
Selby Civic Society?s interactive guide to Selby?s history and heritage has been so successful ? with over 6000 copies distributed since its launch in September 2014 ? that a third edition has been designed and published.
It updates previous editions by incorporating readers? comments, adding new items and now includes a picture quiz for readers to identify some of Selby?s perhaps lesser known buildings and heritage features.
The expanded 36-page booklet has additional articles on Selby?s surprising connections to fungi and mushrooms, and a description of the staggeringly ambitious 1969 ?EXIAS?69? Festival, the highpoint of which was Queen Elizabeth II distributing the Maundy money in Selby Abbey ? or was it Pink Floyd?s gig to 2000 people on St James? field?
Smartphone or tablet users can access over 100 pages of detailed background information by scanning QR codes in the booklet, and an e-version of the booklet is available to read or download from the Publications page of this website.
As in earlier editions, ?Swanning Around Selby? was funded by a grant from the ?Heritage Lottery Fund? and this has allowed the Society to provide it to the public free-of-charge. Copies of the new edition will be available from the end of May from Selby Library, Selby Abbey, Selby station, the Selby Times office, Selby Town Hall and many cafes and shops in the town.
In January the Society received an award from the regional ?Yorkshire & Humber Association of Civic Societies? for the guide being judged the best local community project, and the ?Peter Spawforth? trophy awarded is on display in Selby Library. The guide is also an entry in the National Lottery (Heritage) Awards for 2015, the outcome of which is awaited.
