Society visit to Kirkstall Abbey

Selby Civic Society is having a self-drive visit to Abbey House Museum and Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, for their June event. This will be on Sunday 21st June, meeting at 10.30 in the adjoining car park to the museum.

Kirkstall Abbey is a ruined monastery set in a public park on the north bank of the River Aire. It was founded c1152 and disestablished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It is one of Britain’s best preserved Cistercian monasteries, with over 870 years of history housed within the walls.

The gatehouse is Abbey House Museum where you can discover authentic Victorian streets, which include high street shops, a pub and school room. The museum shows the homes of the wealthy and poor residents of Leeds, how they lived and what people bought over 100 years ago. There is also Abbey Café where coffee, cake and light lunch options are available.

For more details about entry prices and accessibility information please see kirkstallabbey.leeds.gov.uk and abbeyhousemuseum.leeds.gov.uk
